Three o'clock, and the day just seemed to finally wind down a few moments ago. The big rush had passed for the afternoon, and things would be relatively calm until tomorrow, a relief for the young owner of the Pet Shop which had been cleverly named Woofles. Of course, this was only the small end version of the store. The main shelter, located in the heart of the city, was the original, and his boss resided there. This run down place? Well, this was just the open rooms below his cramped apartment building where he kept his faithful dog, Jayla, a purebred black German Shepherd dog which he took great pride in raising so well.
Of course, Jayla was having fun on the roof where the big dogs stayed during the night, so there was no need to worry about her, not that Chazz could afford to since the shop was still open till around six. Too bad he was so damn bored. One or two customers lingered around to stare at the puppies on display, or buy some supplies for their own cherished pets, but no one seemed truly interested in adopting a dog. It always broke Chazz's heart to see abandoned dogs... people too. So he often took in friends and friends of friends until they could hold their own in the rough streets of New York.
A sigh escaped his lips as he patrolled around the store, making sure each pen was clean, and had plenty of water and food. One dog in particular caught his eye, a Boxer puppy with a beautiful red coat that would surely make it a suitable show dog, "Someone is gonna grab you in an instant," he said quietly, a smile making its way onto his face as he pet the canine. The dog whined in pleasure at the attention, relishing the scratches it got behind the ears for however long he would get them.
However, it seemed that that time would be short, as the door opened, and the bells attached jingled to signal the approach of someone coming into Woofles. Fortunately for Chazz, the day would no longer be boring... however, unfortunately, it was the one person he grew completely nervous around. There was a reason he hadn't told Maddie about where his work was or what his work hours were. Hell, he didn't even know if he told her he worked at all for all the time they'd been friends.
"H-hey Maddie," he called, though he didn't move from his spot. The boxer puppy let out an almost quizzical sound to the sudden change in Chazz's mood, but could not question it otherwise. Besides, what could a puppy tell from what a weird human did?

Maddie enterd the store Woofles. For some reason, something was telling her this was where Chaz worked. It was probably her keen sense of smell that had picked up his scent. She grinned broadly as she leaned against the counter, folding her arms over it and leaning against it. Today she had pulled on a pair of army green slacks and a white blouse. Around her neck was a necklace that was made up of soft jade. In her ears were the matching earrings that dangled gently against her shoulder. She applied a smoke green eye shadow on and dark eye liner. Her cheeks were rosy. Her hair fell around her shoulders softly in gentle waves.
She heard Chazz call 'hello' to her, but his tone was different. Nervous. Deciding to dismiss it, she spoke to him softly.
"Hey Chazz. I do see you back there," she joked to him. She spied the puppy he was standing in front of. "He's adorable. No one's adopted him yet?" Maddie asked him sounding sad.
Most dogs came to her, but then again that wasn't exactly a surprise or shock there. She reached up and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear exposing her earring.
"Surprised you didn't I?" She chuckled. "Thought I'd come here and see where you worked. How come you didn't tell me? Oddly, I found the store by luck!"
She beamed at him. She couldn't tell him what she was just yet. She was nervous as it was. They've been best friends for a few years. Over those years, Maddie had formed a crush on him but was terrified to tell him. Maddie's hazel eyes lit up whenever she saw him. She waited for him to respond

Chazz took a deep breath as Maddie came over to him, letting a warm smile grace his features. Thankfully, the discussion switched over to the puppy at hand, something he was comfortable talking about, "Yeah, not yet, but he's new. Only eight weeks old. Someone's bound to come get him for that coat of... hey, I think he likes you!" And indeed, the puppy started to yip and wag its tail while staring at Maddie intently, as if it could sense she was different then Chazz, "Calm down boy," he laughed, picking the small canine up gently and holding it securely. "Wanna hold him Maddie? I have to go to the register and deal with a customer really quick. We're... uh, shorthanded here. I'm the only employee."
He quickly handed off the young Boxer, and ran over to the counter, apologizing to the man standing there waiting. In the small basket the buyer had was a box of treats, and two bags of puppy food. Chazz recognized him as the man who had adopted an elderly Poodle mix by the name of Lady a few months back.
"How is that old girl holding up?" Chazz asked as he counted the money accordingly.
"She's fine. I've never met a dog so willing to adjust to a new home. You must have really treated her with care here. I thought I'd come by and give you the support you needed since I see you working so hard," the man replied. Chazz said a thank you, and as soon as the customer had walked out the door, he sighed, walking back over to his best friend. For a few moments, things seemed to be in slow motion for him... she was so beautiful, it was hard not to stare and drool like an old Bloodhound. It was enough to quickstart his heart rate again, and by the time he had actually approached Maddie, his hand was behind his head, and his face turned into a lopsided, stupid grin:
"Sorry about that. I'll close up the store for a few minutes and show you around. How about it?"

Maddie grinned at the boxer puppy, who'd fallen asleep in her arms already. She gently stroked his head and watched him sleep.
"Sure why not?" Maddie beamed. "It'd be company for me"
She gently nuzzled the puppy before turning back to Chazz.
"Hey wanna join me for lunch? I know a great place in Brooklyn that's got the best roast beef sandwiches" she beamed at him.
It would be fun for the two of them to go out and have some lunch. Spend some time together. She hoped he would say yes, but if he was busy , then perhaps they could do it again another time.
She softly scratched the boxer pup's ears as she watched Chazz, waiting for him to respond.
He had this goofy grin on his face when he approached her and Maddie studied him carefully. Honestly, she loved him a lot. He was so kind and always there for her. He loved the dogs he had in his shop until they got homes. Chazz just absolutely loved his job. Maddie felt a smile forming on her face.
"Take a break. I'll drop fuzzy off here at my house then we can go from there. Whatcha say?" she said beaming at him. "I gotta think of a good name for this little guy too. "
Maddie was terrible at picking names out so she hoped Chazz would have some ideas about what to call the little hairball. The puppy yawned, his little pink tongue curling back into his maw. She had to laugh . It was so cute to see him yawning. The puppy got comfortable in her arms again before gazing up at her with big brown eyes before resting his head under her throat and dozing off again. She giggled.

"Really Maddie? You'll take him?" he asked, surprise and excitement leaking into his voice. The puppy did seem to have taken a liking to his best friend, and honestly, he couldn't think of a better home for the young dog. Maddie was the perfect kind soul to raise a young dog like that. But then the question of the name came up, and Chazz was at a loss. He knew it would have to be something about the Boxer's red fur... but what? He raked his brain as he walked over to the counter to grab the adoption forms.
"Huh, a name," he wondered aloud. "Well, in Japanese, Aka means red.... And he's gonna be graceful like a tiger when he's older, so how about Akatora? It means Red Tiger." He smiled, glad he could use some of his heritage to come up with ideas. It had been so long since he thought of his hometown in Shibuya Tokyo, but deep down, he knew that only held sad memories for him. Perhaps he'd go back and visit one day... one day when he was sure he could face his father.
But for now, he couldn't let that get to him. Maddie had asked him to lunch, something he couldn't refuse. Anything to spend extra time with her was worth his while, right? And though it was closer to dinner than it was to lunch, at least there wasn't a lot going on in the shop. He could easily close it up for an hour or so to take a break with his best friend, "Sure, I'll go. But I'm paying, cuz you just adopted a puppy. Just uh... let me go upstairs and gather some stuff. Mind if I bring my dog too? She could use a walk."
He waited for the answer he already knew was yes, and then quickly ran up the stairs, grabbing a jacket and his keys before whistling for his lovely dog. Jayla came running to him, slipping through the dog door, and wagging her tail happily at the attention, "Yeah, I know girl, calm down. We have to be on our best behavior for Maddie."
Jayla sat down after that, as if she knew exactly what Chazz had said, as if she knew who Maddie was and how important she was to him. To tell the truth, Chazz had spent nights talking to his faithful German Shepherd about his crush on his best friend. He wouldn't put it passed his dog to know what he was talking about at this point.
After a few more moments of just staring at Jayla, Chazz clapped his hands, and raced back down the stairs, grabbing a leash on his way out, "Alright, read to go when you are!" He didn't waste too much time after that, grabbing all the supplies that Maddie would need for her new pet, and putting it in a bag. "Lead the way to your apartment!"
He had a firm grip on the supplies, knowing that Maddie already had her hands full with the sleeping puppy. He was happy to do this though - it was just like Chazz anyway, to be so helpful. It was one of the things he enjoyed doing for anyone, though especially for his best friend.
After they left the store, Chazz locked the place up quickly, and let Jayla trot beside him without a leash. It was a good thing he had trained her so well, or this walk would have been impossible, "Nothing could be better than a lunch out with my two favorite girls!" he joked, staring down at Jayla. He didn't dare look at Maddie though, knowing he'd go red if he met her gaze after that statement.

Maddie beamed at Chazz as he ran and got some supplies for her. She tilted her head at the name he suggested.
"Ha that would probably fit him to a T," she laughed as Chazz grabbed his jacket and his german shepherd. Immediately, Maddie's eyes lit up when she spied the shepherd. She grinned at the dog then raised her eyes to Chazz's.
Once Chazz locked up, Maddie began leading the way to her house.
She shifted the puppy carefully, so that her left arm was free. She slowly linked her arm with his. He had said his 'two favorite girls'. Maddie looked at him and beamed.
"Yep and I get to spend time with my favorite guy," She beamed at him. She affectionately squeezed his arm as they walked down the street. Maddie turned the corner and they walked a few feet before they arrived at Maddie's house.
"Here we are. Mr. Tiger here will have plenty of room to run around in. The backyards huge!" Maddie said as she led him up the front steps and opened her door. She led Chazz into the house. She loved it it was cozy and comfortable. It was a one story ranch. She dropped her keys on the table and gently placed the puppy on the couch. He went on sleeping and didn't move.
"Make yourself at home. I am gonna change," Maddie said to him softly. She entered her bedroom and pulled out a fresh pair of clothes before she entered the bathroom and changed clothes. She hated wearing the same thing for a long period of time, plus they were going out for lunch. Maddie wanted to look a little nicer. She found a nice little black sundress. She pulled on a pair of Mary Jane shoes and pulled her hair up onto a bun. Some of the shorter strands had come loose and hung against her shoulders softly. Her mind screamed at her that she was secretly trying to impress Chazz, but she shook the thoughts away and re-entered the living room.
"You can drop his stuff here. If you want to leave Jayla here too while we go to the restaurant," Maddie offered to Chazz and waited for him to respond.

F-favorite guy?! his mind screamed. He had to look up at that, the surprise written all over his face, but he wasn't complaining. That was a good sign right? Though his mind went totally numb when Maddie linked arms with him, W-well don't make the puppy jealous!" he exclaimed.
At last, the pair came to Maddie's house, which Chazz stared at in envy. So much bigger than his one room apartment above his pet shop... and probably much more livable for a puppy. Well, at least he was more than positive the little Boxer would have a good home, especially when Maddie explained she had a large backyard. He smiled at her as she set the newly named Mr. Tiger on the couch, and he went right back to sleep. Jayla whined at Chazz, wondering if she too could sleep up there, "Probably not a good idea girl," he said as Maddie dismissed herself to change. "You're a little too big for that."
Though not like she ever listens when it comes to bedtime back at home... he thought. Most days, Chazz would wake up with Jayla sprawled out against his chest, her huge frame making it difficult to breathe properly. Too bad he was a softie when it came to dogs or maybe he'd actually get a good night's sleep one of these days. It was no big deal though... Chazz would be alright as long as there was caffine in this world.
He sighed softly as he glanced around Maddie's house. She really had a good situation here, and he was truly happy for her, albeit jealous. He was so close to being broke these days living in a two room apartment was like a far off dream. I really need to stop taking in stray animals and people, he thought solemnly. It's ruining my wallet.
But his thoughts were abruptly cut off when Maddie came back in. He turned around, blinking in astonishment, "Wow, you look great! I didn't realize we had to dress up for the occasion... though...." he trailed off, a hint of worry clouding his eyes. "You should probably grab a coat. Winter is setting in fast you know."
He then turned to Jayla, who was still staring at the couch longingly, "Behave girl. We'll be back soon, alright?" The German Shepherd let out a yip in response, wagging her tail as she stared back at the two humans. Chazz laughed a bit, and then said, "Alright Maddie, lead the way! I'm starved!"

Maddie immediately felt foolish.
"Oh God too much?" She asked looking rather embarassed and stupid for the idea of changing. She went to head back into her room, but had to pause and laugh at the site of Jayla looking longly to Chazz to stay behind.
"Looks like Jayla's made herself at home already" Maddie laughed heartily.
Maddie sensed Chazz's feeling and headed toward him. She stopped in front of him.
"Listen. If you ever want a place to crash, you can certainly come here. I have more than enough room" Maddie offered him softly putting a hand on his shoulder.
The dogs were clearly enjoying themselves greatly.
"I probably look stupid right?" Maddie asked Chazz grinning lopsidedly. It was true the weather was coming in like a lion. Winter was not far off and the weather itself was getting chillier and chillier at night. Maddie had a lot of room in the house to house at least 3 or four people at once. There was two bathrooms and five bedrooms. She loved the house it was cozy and just homey.
Just then Maddie's cell phone rang and she headed over to it. She had placed it on the coffee table and pressed the green 'talk' button.
"Hello?[/i]" she asked into the phone and turned her eyes onto Chazz. She grinned at him broadly, but as the person on the other end of the phone began to speak, the grin faded.
"Oh my God. When?" Maddie asked quietly as her hand began to shake holding the phone against her ear. Maddie collapsed onto the coffee table. "Ok. Thank you" she said in an even quieter tone. Maddie ended the conversation and stared at the entertainment center.
"That was the police. My dad was hit by a car. He didn't make it" Maddie choked out thickly. Her voice shook violently as tears began forming in her eyes blurring the outline of the entertainment center.

Chazz put his hands up to indicate innocence when Maddie asked if she was too dressed up, "No, no! You really do look good Maddie, but I just thought you might get cold!" he exclaimed nervously. Jayla barked at him, as if to laugh, and he sent her a meaningful glare that clearly said, "Shut up."
Thankfully, he was saved from any more embarrassment as Maddie's phone rang in the nick of time. He sighed gratefully at his luck, though he'd regret thinking that in a few moments, as suddenly, the grin on his best friend's face was replaced by one of shock, and then he could feel the sorrow rush off her in waves. Immediately, he walked over to her, even before she could finish with the phone.
When the words: "Oh my god. When?" left Maddie's mouth, Chazz knew it wasn't a good sign. Something terrible had happened, because those very words had scarred him all those years ago when he was about six. His father had said them in such a similar manner....
"That was the police. My dad was hit by a car. He didn't make it."
Chazz was silent after that, unsure of what to do, how to respond. He took in a sharp breath at the news, his fists clenching at his sides in an attempt to hold back his own overwhelming emotions. He had never been good at handling this kind of stuff, mostly because of his own scars from a similar ordeal from his childhood... but for Maddie's sake, he had to do something.
So instead of speaking, he weaved his arms around her and gave her a long hug, anything, no matter how uncomfortable it made him normally, would be better than seeing Maddie break down right now. He wouldn't be able to stand if if she started to cry, "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "Come on, sit down on the couch with your puppy. He'll make you feel better. We don't have to go anywhere, okay?"
He let go after that, linking arms with Maddie like on their walk, and leading her over to where the two dogs were, "It'll be okay eventually," he tried after they sat down. He gently let go of his friend, and turned to pick up Akatora and place him in her lap. Jayla too, came over to Maddie and put her head on his friend's leg.
Chazz smiled a bit at them, but his voice was still soft, still sorrowful, "I wish I could say there was an easy way to get over these things, especially when it comes as such a shock. But it's going to hurt, it might for the rest of your life... but don't let it get to you too much. You're still here, and your dad wouldn't be happy seeing you so sad. Just remember his life, the times you had with him. He's not really gone forever, as long as you remember what he taught you, right?"
He paused, "I'm sorry, I'm probably not even helping. But I know how you feel Maddie, I really do.... do you need anything from me?"

Maddie felt Chazz hug her. She hugged him back tightly, resting her chin on his shoulder. He led her over to the couch and sat down with her.
Maddie broke down and began sobbing. She hadn't wanted him to let go and right now just wanted to be held. She slung her arms around his neck again and buried her face into his shoulder as she sobbed.
He might've been a jerk, knowing what she was and giving her a hard time, but she did love him. She hadn't wanted him to die.
She heard Chazz speaking softly , trying to comfort her.
"He might've been a jerk, but I did care about him greatly," Maddie sobbed her voice muffled by Chazz's shirt. The dogs sensed something was wrong and had come over to her.
She hugged Chazz tightly, hoping he didn't mind her clinging to him like this. He'd asked if she wanted him to do anything. She slowly pulled back and stared into his face.
"Would you stay with me for a bit? I dont feel like being alone right now" she admitted . Their faces were inches apart.
Her heart hammered a bit in her chest at this closeness.
He'd lost his mother so he was in the same boat she was in. It wasn't a boat she particually liked or wanted to be in period. Maddie offered him a weak smile.
"Dad hated me. He hated what I was," Maddie said quietly. "He gave me a hard time all the time but I never got a chance to tell him that I did care about him greatly"
At this point, Maddie was probably going to tell Chazz what she was. If he hated her, then this would be the second person she'd lost in the same day. She wasn't sure her heart could handle that. But now, it seemed eminent.

It took all Chazz had to not tense up and freak out when Maddie latched onto him. The reality of it was too much for him to take... was this really happening? But then he reminded himself, that Maddie was in a state of mourning. It would be terribly unfair for him to use this moment in the way he wanted to. If Maddie wanted to accept his feelings for her, it would have to be at a later point, one that was at a calmer time. Chazz didn't believe in taking advantage of a situation like this, so even when her face was so close to his own, he resisted every urge he had to kiss her, and instead looked down at the two dogs.
"I won't leave then," he said quietly, trying to make the beating of his heart stop hammering like construction in his ears. Thankfully, he didn't have to wait too long to take his mind off of his deeper feelings, as the topic changed to Maddie's dad. He frowned, wondering why she and her dad didn't get along. For him, it was mostly his own stupid fears that he couldn't talk to his father, but they never particularly got along growing up either.
"How could anyone hate you?" he asked suddenly, lifting his gaze once again. "You're the best person I know, really. I can't imagine anyone not liking you...." he trailed off, his eyes now curious, though he didn't want to pry. It wasn't his business to ask about Maddie's relationship with her family. "You've got a big heart Maddie, especially if you can love someone that wasn't kind to you in the past. I'm sure your dad is in peace now, and I'm sure he didn't hate you while he was alive. Maybe he just didn't express it well?"

Maddie curled up on the couch next to him, letting her head rest on his thigh. She hiccuped and let out a strangled chuckle.
"My Dad hated me for what I was," she said deciding it was time to tell him. She had no choice. "Chazz, what I'm about to tell you I haven't been able to tell you outright before. I was too scared but I feel it's time you knew. I'm a skinwalker. My canine form is the same as Jayla's" she said
Her eyes shut, waiting for him to stand up and leave her right then and there. It wouldn't be the first time that happened. When she had told her parents for the first time, her father up and left her. She had remembered, sitting there feeling horrible and crushed. Her mother had been accepting and loved her for it. But since then, her father looked at her like she was some kind of mongrel...a dirty beast that had no right living among them.
"I understand if you don't want to see me anymore after this" she said quietly. "And my dad looked at me each time like I was some kind of mongrel that didn't deserve to live among them in a house. He believed I should've lived on the street in a cardboard box battling fleas and begging for food each night. "
A bit of bitterness had crept into her voice.
"My mother accepted me for who I was" she continued. "But he never treated me the same way again. And yeah I guess your right. I do have a good heart. For Christmas he would buy me dog chews and throw it, expecting me to fetch"
At that the tears spilled over. She kept her head resting on Chazz's thigh staring at the entertainment center.
"I'm sure you think I'm the same way. i wouldn't blame you" her tone was quiet as she shut her eyes, waiting for those familiar words to come from someone she loved in this world more than life.

Chazz was silent for a few minutes after Maddie told him what she was. A skinwalker? He knew a bit about them, but not enough to really judge the creatures. The hardest part for him was... if she was a skinwalker... didn't that mean there was no chance for them... together? That thought alone was enough to break his heart, but he said nothing... just thought and thought and thought. Unfortunately for him, he knew that he'd still feel the same about Maddie every time he saw her....
"Aw crap," he sighed, hanging his head in disappointment as from his realization. He was a hopeless fool when it came to his best friend, "I couldn't hate you Maddie. You're a skinwalker, but you're still my best friend. Actually, if you want to know the truth, I'm a little bit jealous. I bet you can understand dogs so much better than I can."
He paused, his eyes meeting hers as she lay down on his thighs. Chazz smiled warmly at her, "I guess it makes sense though. You always did seem to have some sixth sense about you. I bet that's also why Tiger over here took a liking to ya, huh? You know, a human's love is almost disposable, but a dog will love you indefinitely. I've always thought that was the beautiful thing about them. People can be so... so horrible. I'm sorry your father was so awful to you. I hope you know I'd never do that."
Chazz went quiet again after that, his heart pounding in his ears because he still couldn't take his eyes away from her. Despite the revelation that she was a Skinwalker... that she was part dog... Maddie was still so hard to tear away from. Chazz had to resist so hard to not react upon his feelings... so much so that a pained look actually washed over his face from the strain of it all. But he could feel himself crack, as he brought a hand to her face and brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes, "You know, a smile suits you much better," he whispered.
But his conscious would soon catch up to him as he started to sink lower, the temptation overwhelming. He was so close... so damn close that he could feel her breath in his face. But he couldn't do this. It wasn't right, "I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm thinking. It's not fair...."

Maddie sat upright and looked into his eyes. She felt a huge weight lift from her shoulders. She was slightly shocked when he reached over and brushed a few strands of hair away from her face. He said it wasn't fair.
"What are you talking about?" Maddie asked him shocked. "A human's love isn't indisposable! I'm in love with a human, not a dog!"
She looked at him stunned. Humans and skinwalkers could mate from what she had read. The babies were mostly going to be human, but that was the brunt of it. She didn't care much as long as she could have a family of her own someday.
Without thinking, on pure impulse, Maddie gently placed both hands on the side of Chazz's face and leaned in to kiss him softly.
When she pulled back after a few moments, she stared into Chazz's eyes for a moment before offering him a faint smile.
"Incase you were wondering, that human is you silly" she said her tone light. She didn't care she just wanted to be with him. She was so happy that he hadn't judged her or even abandoned her. He accepted her for what she was and that made her feel so happy inside.
"I'm in love with you, Chazz," she said quietly and softly as she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him, her chin resting on his shoulder. Her hair tickled the side of his face as she waited to see what his reaction would be to her statement.
He had always been there for her and they'd been best friends for years now. It had started out that way but now Maddie had felt it had grown immensely over the last 9 months or even the past year.

It was a total shock, one that he was sure had stopped his heart and made him dead, but as soon as the kiss had stopped, his heart was pounding a million miles an hour in his ears, his face now redder than it had ever been. Where did that come from? Chazz stared at Maddie, completely dumbfounded at what had just happened. She had just kissed him! Wasn't that the wrong way around? But then again, when did Chazz ever care about anything "proper?" He was just... overwhelmed... though happy. Very happy.
"I, uh... I guess that's good," he started, his voice a bit slurred, but a grin making its way onto his face as she rested her head on his shoulder. He didn't resist anymore, immediately putting his own head on top of hers, relishing her warmth. It felt good, it felt good to be loved, but then Chazz realized, with a start... that while he knew so much about Maddie, she didn't know much about him. A bit of guilt made its way into his mind at that thought. He'd been lying by not saying anything to her about when he first came to America as a teenager. Bits and pieces were revealed here and there during their time as friends, but absolutely nothing about his brutal times as a... he couldn't even bring himself to think it it bothered him so much.
She can't know I've been to prison, he thought solemnly. She'd probably hate me.
