With my head tilted firmly to the side I strode over towards the source of that strange - yet familiar - sound. My beady black eyes locked onto a figure. It was that of a wolf and possibly something more. A look of worry and dismay crept across my features as I noticed there was no other animals with this candid. At first I had assumed an owl or perhaps an eagle had made its perch upon my company's back but from a closer observation I found this to be far from the truth. My mouth parted in a gape, the hinges of my jaw aching from what I assumed to be the wideness of the opening. I couldn't help but stare in wonder and disbelief at this being. I attempted to close my maw, but only partially succeeded. My mouth still hung open but only partially. As a breathed in deeply I could see my breath in the chilly, afternoon air.
I drew closer towards this creature, my gaze sweeping over his every feature. With each step I took I could feel my skin contracting, ripping and opening the previous wounds I had endured, but it was nothing more than a scratch. With my endurance I could handle it easily. I could feel my entire body sway with each step until I got up as close as I could let myself venture.
The wolf-like creature was mostly a pure white color save for the dark, nearly black face. This darker shade covered around his eyes and down his muzzle, touching at the cheek bones and ending at a round shape towards the edges. Upon his back, latched to his shoulder blades, sat magnificent white bird wings, the feathers large and appealing. I had eaten the few birds I had been lucky to catch before but I was positive that this thing was not a bird. After I was satisfied with what I had seen of his appearance and the shock had begun to wear away I noticed his posture and the position that he lay in. He was cowering, his tail tucked neatly between his legs in a show of submission. 'How can something that magnificent looking be acting so submissive?' I asked myself through thought. I placed a light and friendly smile across my maw in an attempt to show him that I meant no harm to him - that is, so long as he didn't mean harm towards me. I blinked a few times and turned my head right ways again, strong aches proceeding to fill from the base of my neck to my shoulder blades from the length of time I had let my blocky skull remain cocked. My right ear flicked uneasily.
"Hello there, friend," I started, my voice loud and almost booming - as a bear's voice naturally is - and appearing to send birds a flight from the tree tops. "There's no need to be hunkered down like that. I mean you no harm."
With that said I took a few steps back and, first sitting down while on all fours, lifted myself up so that I sat at a higher posture. My muscles were relaxed and I tried to make myself seem as nonthreatening as possible so as not to scare off the company. "That is," I continued from where I had previously left off, "So long as you mean no harm towards me." My ears flicked from a nearby squawk. 'Probably just some bird somewhere,' my mind assured me. My gaze shifted lazily to the skies as if in search of the bird. I had no luck. Using my right paw and claws I began to scratch at my already ripped up belly. My black claws scraped against the tough skin and thick fur protecting my stomach. I shifted my gaze back towards this new wolf. "I'm Rowan," I said in an attempt to strike up a conversation. I had always been taught it's polite to announce your own name before asking the name of others. Waiting for anything for an answer I finally ventured forward with the question, "So what's your name?"
My black, beady eyes were locked on him, awaiting his reply. It wasn't a hostile glare, just a simple "I'm interested" type of look. My ears pricked forward in an attempt to show interest. To make it even more obvious I leaned forward and, placing my massive paws up against the hard, tundra ground, pulled myself forward, still sitting on my butt. My eyes glimmered with a hint of curiosity towards this remarkable creature.
